Senator Yerima has been in the news ever since the bill to outlaw underage marriage was reversed. Apparently, he has been the most vocal lawmaker behind the legalization of underage marriage.
In a recent interview with Channels TV, the former Zamfara State Governor
revealed that he has a total of 28 children and was willing to give his daughters who are under the age of 18 out in marriage at anytime.
In fact, Yerima was quick to say that he’s marrying off one of his 16-year-old daughters on September 26.
In the interview, Yerima also debunked several allegations including blackmailing the Senate to overturn the child marriage bill and the news of him marrying his driver’s Egyptian daughter. He however admitted that he did take in an Egyptian bride.
Since the Senate’s overturn of the bill, there has been widespread criticism as to why underage Nigerian girls should be led into early marriage, spawning a #ChildNotBride campaign that insists it’s pens our girls need, not penis.
